Welcome!

Welcome to my blog! This is a place for me to organize and display my thoughts on education and get feedback. My current plan is to open a private high school called Murray Academy. Above are pages with my most recent thoughts. Enjoy!

Culture Classes

I envision culture classes to have a large focus on etiquette like a traditional finishing school. The first semester is the same for all students in their respective levels, but second semester, the students get to choose from a much more limited list of classes to pursue for the entire semester. These classes should work well for classes with both males and females.

A few things I want to add (6/1/12):

Portfolio of some of the emails for history and language to turn in to culture class for grading for etiquette.
Seminar topics in culture class instead of as seminars?

Subjects that could be covered in each semester are as follows:

First semester: many different units

Personal image: sitting, standing, walking, dressing, speaking
Handwriting: including full cursive (like being able to sign name or SAT statement)
Table manners
Being a good conversationalist
Being a good dinner guest - bringing gift of gratitude (flowers, wine, dessert, etc.), immediately commenting on the quality of the food, possibly asking for recipe, etc.
Being a good house guest - what to do with towels and sheets, etc.
Social networking
Common Courtesies: being a good neighbor, living with others

Around town
Dining out
Sports and recreation
Attending performances
Volunteering

Official (government) dealings: protocol
Ceremonies and religious services: Wedding

Phone, computer, and other technology etiquette
Job search and interview

Notes, letters, invitations, announcements
Greetings
Social names and titles
Illness, loss, grieving, condolences

Hosts and guests
Entertaining at home
Formal dinners and parties
Giving and receiving gifts
Setting a proper table

Social dance
Home economics
Exposure to music, art, and theatre

International etiquette: conversation, business, dining, leisure, wedding, food etc.

Second semester: students get to pick from a variety of subjects as a focus topic for the semester

International etiquette
Cooking and nutrition
Sewing and quilting
Interior decoration
Hosting
Volunteering
Social dance
Ceremonies and religious services

  1. Hi Jasmine,

Why do you think it is important to teach etiquette?

  2. Hey Alex! I think it is important to teach etiquette because many students today do not use it, and often they have no one to teach them. Also, it is important in social situations, which is important in today's world. Someone who is interviewing for a job may unknowingly interrupt an interviewer or commit a social faux pas with a potential employer or even friend. I'd like a school of respectful, mindful students. I think that's one of the easiest ways to make a difference in a student's life.
